Chipboard also known as paperboard or cardboard is a thick paper based material made from recycled paper via laminating one or more layers into each other to generate the end product. Usually chipboard comes with one to three layers of coating on the top and one layer on the reverse side. Because of its recycled content it will be mostly grey on the inside. The main market of chipboard is custom packaging, packaging of frozen or chilled food, shoes, toys. We were tasked to sourcing high grade chipboard globally to reduce buying cost as well as improve the existing quality.
Our client is in the packaging business and they used a lot of single ply chipboard for their day to day operations. Our initial research showed a 26% savings potential with an improved quality leading to multi layer board with smoother surface and less water content. After the initial research we found two very reliable suppliers in Dongguan city of Guangdong province China.
Our second phase confirmed the quality and established the standards of how many layers and how much recycled content would be acceptable for each product. During this phase we also determined the maximum efficiency on the board sizes and had a part of the container processed to two specific sizes of same chipboard.
End result was better than expected. It took about 5 weeks from the order to delivery of the first run and the new boards performed better improving efficiency. The new sizes also reduced waste content and improved overall yield of the boards. Client ended up saving over 34% over the existing supplier and moved on to replace other color needs such as full black and white from the same supplier.
